recessed lighting install help

I recently installed recessed lighting in a room with no previous lights. There is a light switch that controlled an outlet which was rewired to permanently have power. I am trying to use the switch to control the lights but its not working. When i hook up the dimmer the lights go on no matter what position the switch is in, then when I push a button on the dimmer the switch blows out but the lights stay on. It's a standard wiring setup, 1 black, 1 white and a ground. Any help would be great.
