Wiring a light

You did not indicate how you wired the light and switches.

There are 2 basic methods.

Power feed at the switch.

And power feed at the light.

It sounds like you have the latter.

NOTE THAT THE WHITE WIRE TO THE SWITCH IS NOT A NEUTRAL.

AND IT SHOULD BE REMAKRED. TYPICALLY WRAP EACH END WITH BLACK TAPE.

That is called switch leg wiring.
