Doing 12 ft by 45 ft I get over 500 sq. ft. Dividing 358x9 to get sq. yards though I get 40, so maybe he was trying to convert it to yards which is how carpet was normally priced before.
Why do you need to know linear feet? If we know this we might be able to help you get the numbers you need. Linear feet by 12 feet? By 1 foot? If your trying to purchase floorcovering of any kind; all you need is the square footage. Take that number to the store and tell it to them and they'll get you the amount you need. For example, if you need 100 sq. ft. of 18" tile, you don't need to know you need 45 pieces, you only need to know you need 100 sq. ft.
