the better airflow, the more power/efficiency results,,, by 'sut', did you mean soot ?
the smell's from unburn'd oil (soot) caused by an incorrect mixture of oil/air,,, 3 things rqd for fire - air, fuel, & ignition temp.
chimney flu'll be smelly & black til you have it clean'd & the combustible fuel/air mix adjusted.
