Pre hung doors Posted by vincefarrell on November 18th, 2007 10:39 AM
Hanging a door is not difficult however hanging a door that performs well over a life time is a little harder. I watched a video of a carpenter installing a door who made it look simple on this site and appeared to to be a good installer by todays standards. But as a person who install pre hung doors for a living I saw many things that in his processs that could cause failure as early as the paint stage. I personally don't shim doors and I beleive that I may have door failures of 1 out of 100. This is somewhat of a guess do to the fact that trades are not held accoutable for such installation due to settling and foundation movement. I have several contractors that call me when they are having door problem to fix or come up with some solution when they are having problems. Therre are many thing that have to be taken into consideration such as nail gauge , length sizes , placement of nails and patterns ,where to put level on door , where to put shims if used ( video contractor appeared to put them in a spot that served no purpose) and are all the walls plum and in a straight line from cripple to cripple. I will be happy to tell more on how to install a door my way which will preform better, will have a solid sound when it shuts , in most cases will not be knocked out of rough opening if slamed shut, and not use 1 shim. Just ask! Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
