* At the GFCI, disconnect the black and white load wires.
* Using an ohmmeter, measure the black wire and then the white wire to copper ground. There must be no reading.
* When the wiring and GFCI were first installed, the electrician or whoever installed the wiring ran the wire to an outlet that you may not be aware of.
* While you have the ohmmeter, measure between the black and the white wire. If you have everything unplugged, there should be no reading. If you do have a reading, then there is something plugged into an outlet or device that you are not aware of.
