Tile is a good choice. Personally, I don't like HUGE tiles unless you have a HUGE space. In my kitchen I have 8"x 8" tiles with gray grout. This grout has required zero maintaiance and it doesn't show dirt. If you use light colored grout you will be dissapointed b/c it usually ends up being gray or beige anyway after it gets dirty, except it looks bad b/c it is blotchy and darker in heavy use areas. I would keep smallish grout lines by putting tiles relatively close together, use gray or dark grout, and clean and seal every year or two.
