What kind of tile do you have? If it's very hard porcelin; you may need a the diamond core bits. The normal way we've usually gone through tile though is with a masonry bit with a hammer drill. Be careful because this can crack the tile if your not careful. For the vertical surface; definitely do what Bill said with the spray bottle and sponge. It keeps everything cooler/ less chance of breaking.
