interesting, that "ghosting" is the correct term for the situation, but your reference is to a different condition by the same name.
The relevant "ghosting" has to do with airborne particles and how they are attracted to walls, ceilings, etc, in patterns due to minute variations in temperature and electrical charge, coinciding with framing members behind the drywall.
Every time I've seen it in a house, the culprit has been candle soot, but other sources may be wood smoke, cigarette smoke, fine dust such as cement dust, etc.
another common telltale sign is dark lines under doors where air currents carry soot thru the carpets.
Eliminate the particulate source and repaint.
