cutting granite

we want to put a 16 x 54 inch piece of granite in front of our fireplace...i broke up the 80 year old terra cotta tile in front....the granite i want to put in its place is 1 3/16 thick...its way too high right now...my question is can i cut 1/2 inch off...?? i know it would weaken the granite but its going in front off the fireplace....i can't breakup the existing cement that was under the terra cotta...ur thoughts?
