Hardwood Floors-New and Existing

Posted by miller13 on January 9th, 2008 08:49 PM

We have decided to replace the carpeting in the dining room with hardwood. The entryway and kitchen (on either side of the dining rm) is solid hardwood flooring.

We have purchased prefinished 3/4" solid harwood. We would like to have the new floor blend into the original floors w/o the use of any moulding (thus creating a ridge between the rooms).

The rooms would meet at the archways, the big box store is saying we need the moulding b/t the new and existing for expansion, but if every other part of the floor has the expansion gap and we lay the new floor flush with the old (assuming they are the same height)-wouldn't that be the same if all three areas had been done in hardwood orginally?

The new floor will run in the same direction as the original.
