Bathroom Mystery

I own a home bulit in 1924. There is a copper lid on the bathroom floor appox 4" in diameter. Lately when the tub starts to back up, water comes out from under this copper lid! Someone told us it's some sort of filter or something. Does anyone know what this is and should we remove it? Thanks.
