Microlam beams

Posted by jafo72867 on January 14th, 2008 10:39 AM

I want to renovate my kitchen. However, there is a load bearing beam on the gable side of my house, which is carrying the weight of the 2nd floor (two bedrooms are directly above this beam). This load bearing beam drops six inchs below the ceiling and is supported by four verticle beams (4 x 4 construction). My design plan would eliminate the load bearing beam and verticle support beams and replace them with a microlam beam, which would be placed above the ceiling. This microlam beam would need to be approx 30 feet in length. What size microlam do I need to carry the weight of the second floor without the need of verticle support beams?
