garbage disposal

I am replacing my garbage disposal,
I have removed the garbage disposal (emerson), but the metal collar (?) that holds the disposal will not screw off of the well,
so that the new fittings can be replace.
The collar turns, and there looks to be threads, but the collar will not go across the lip.
