replace gas hot water heater with electric

i would like to replace my gas water heater with an electric. Is this easy to do? Already have a 220 outlet in the area boiler is in now.

Also have friend that has a used electric hot water heater in garage. How can I check it to make sure it still works without installing it first and finding out it doesn't work.
