Water hammer occurs only when the flow of water is turned off suddenly at a faucet or some other shut-off valve, such as an ice maker or washing machine. Can you correlate the sound with one of these events? Water hammer does not occur except under these curcumstances. (I am ruling out a supernatural event.)
