Old fashioned basement door - OK to seal up

I just bought an old house with the old fashioned double basement doors. They are shot and I would like to totally eliminate that entry and build a deck near and over the area where they are now. We can get to the basement from our kitchen ... Why wouldn't I want to seal that basement entry? I am trying to justify sealing that door off, but wonder if there is a reason that I shouldn't
