Airflow is critical on any temperature control appliance but especially an electric furnace (I am assuming electric from the description)
Replace the filters, clean the blower wheel if you can get to it, you may even have to clean the evaporator if this also acts as an air conditioner, then your smell problems will likely go away also if you have a pet they like to hang around the return air in take if there is no filter at all your unit is getting a straight shot of pet hair every time it turns on
