You either have a bad seal or some foreign particle got in there and is preventing the valve from seating completely. Most BP valves have repair kits available for replacing the innards bit that task is usually done by a person certified to test/replace BP valves. Depending on your state/county policies, you may need to have that BP valve re-tested periodically by a certified tester. Many testers will have the parts/tools to open a BP valve up and fix it on-site. In my area, (same county as Seattle, WA.), it is water department policy that your BP valves be tested and certified once every year or the department will shut off your water.
Normally it costs me $45 a year to get a BP test/certification. If the valve needs a rebuild it could cost an additional $100 or so. If you installed the valve yourself, then you are probably "under the radar" of any regulation authority. Once they find out about it, they may require the periodic test. Incidentally, if you install an underground yard sprinkler system, many jurisdictions also require a BP valve for that too, and possibly another periodic test/certification for that as well.
