There is a slight possibility that the button is shorted or that the control wiring is shorting.

Another possibility is that what you are hearing is the motor running, but the drive pully slipping. There is a setscrew in the pulleys that can come loose.

That opener is about 30 years old and parts are not available. And it is best to just replace it.
