Detached Garage Wiring

Currently I have a seperate meter on the garage. I would like to do away with that and wire it to the house. I have no idea what type/size wire to run or if I can even go underground to the garge panel. I fully understand a certified electrician should hook everything up, but, I can do the labor. BTW, will the need for 220 single phase change anything??
