You need 240/120 single phase service. NOT 220. 240 has been the standard voltage for decades.

There are way too many unknows here to be able to give any meaning full answers.

Such as the demand needed in the garage, the demanded need by the house, the capacity of the current house service, the type and age of both panels, etc, etc.

You need to consult with the electrican about what is needed.
