"I have a Sears Craftsman Liftmaster model number 1270/1280 garage door opener"

I had a hard time figuring out what you had.

Chamberlain is the manufacture and makes the Sears and Chamberlain DIY install openers. And they make the Professional Liftmaster line.

The main difference is that the Liftmasters have one piece rails.

Exactly what happens when you try and close it? Does the light flash? Do you hear any clicking? Does the LED on the learn button flash. And if you see any flashing what is the code?

My guess is that got the switches out of sync.

If you remove the belt will the motor run the full cycle up and down (tell by watchin the gears and the motion of the limit switch assembly.

Then run it to down postion and move the belt to then down position. Look the manaul. It is shipped in the down positiion.

Then reconnect the belt.
