Sandbox & raised flowerbed

I have two boys that are too big for the plastic sandboxes, but we need one for a few more years. We plan to sell our house someday and, therefore, to increase buyer, appeal would like to build a sandbox that can be easily converted to a raised flower bed/garden by changing the sand to soil.

Being in Oklahoma, I also need a way to shade the sandbox (thinking of corner braces and a tarp?). I'm also concerned with weight if the raise flower bed has a false bottom. Can I simply pour soil on top of the sand to make the flower bed? How deep should it be?

Any comments or ideas you may have would be great. I hope to build this during spring break.
