convert window to door

Posted by shazam410 on January 29th, 2008 06:48 PM

I have a two-story all brick 1942 Tudor and wish to add a back porch. In order to access this porch, I need to convert a 36 3/4" window into a door. I have submitted this, what I think is a small job, to one of those construction service sites. 4 contractors came out and I felt like the small job had turned into an extreme makeover! 2 of the men (I don't want to use the word contractor as they called themselves - designers), came out in pinstripped suits and proceeded to take pictures with cell phone which they transmitted to "engineer"? I felt like I was on some kind of show and did not appreciate the bad-mouthing the 2 gave to what they called "everyday joe contractor with a pu). I happen to have the utmost respect for building tradespeople and these comments were very rude. I am going to night school to get certified in concrete construction.

Bids ranged from $2500-7000. I live in Sacramento CA. Can you give me a rough idea of what this project would cost? Thanks..........
