What I am talking are soffits on the INTERIOR of the house. They are dropped parts of ceilings that are used above some kitchen cabinets and in some bathrooms.
IN some cases the ceiling is finished with DW and then the soffit built. In that case there is no problem.
But in others the soffit is built when the house is framed. Then dry walled with the rest of the house.
In that case it will can be a big opening between the house and the attic.
Yes you can combine exhaust. But I have not done it. You can do either the current fans if they are move enough air or an inline fan. But you don't want to run excess lenght of duct to combine them. That will hurt the air flow and also allow places for the moisture in the air to condense inside the ducts.
Do a google on Fantec (or it might be Fantech) and Panasonic Fan.
Many of the sites that have them have all of the fittings and accessors.
