patching a large hole in textured wall

I patched the large hole in the drywall using the traditional method but now I don't know how to get the texture back into this section of the wall. These walls were done in 1960's with sand and swirling pattern. I wish I could blend the patch or get rid of the texture all together in the room. My husband and I are remodeling this room anyway.
