In general, nailers don't take a lot of air. I run nailers and staplers just fine on a 1 gal mini-compressor. Now I'm not doing a roof or anything, but it works fine.

CFM or SCFM is a measure of the capacity (in volume) the compressor can produce at a given pressure. Things like sprayers, sanders, and some air tools suck up the CFM.

Another measure is the "duty cycle" Some compressors are only designed to run something like 30 minutes of every hour. Others can run much higher.

Personally, there are so many exaggerations with Max HP and Peak HP, I would ignore them. A real measure of a motor's power is more proportional to the amperage it draws that what the marketing department decided to lie on the label.
