I'm not sure of your situation but if your new furnace is similar to your old one their should be no difference in return air but if you are asking about adding return air that is always a good idea. If you are talking about adding a filter in addition to the filter in the hall that is not a good idea unless you make sure to change both filters at filter change time most, of the time when there is a double filter setup people forget to change the filter at the unit and have a service call only to find the filter at the unit plugged up.
You can definitely use the same filter in the hallway as long as the new furnace is drawing air through it you need to check this is the new furnace sitting on a return box (plenum) or is the return duct cut into the side or back of the new furnace?
