Hi, Linda. Part of the answer to this depends on what stripper you used. If you used a Methyl Chloride based stripper, then is is a good idea to wash the surface with denatured alcohol. Other strippers have their own solvents Like Citristrip's Paint Remover Wash and some strippers can be washed with paint thinner/mineral spirits. Do the washing outside and leave the rags outside for a couple of days to dry completely.
When the wash is dry, you can lightly sand just to open the pores. Ususally, 150 or 220 grit is sufficient. Vacuum and tack rag and you are ready to stain.
