"That there isn't enough duct work for all that hot air to go, now I'm no engineer, but if the hot air has access to 1700 sq foot of floor, shouldn't that be enough?"

There well may be a problem with the duct work.

The amount of pressure need to distribute the air varies with lenght and size of the ducts and vents.

And your system might be too restrictive for a modern furance allowing it to overhead and cycling on over temp limits and never notice it.

And it might have been real close to the limit and over the years the blower has built up dirt reducing he flow.

No one can really tell from a distance. And without seeing the part it is hard to tell exactly what failed or why.

But like the OP I am suspicous that the 3 sensors failed.

What you need is an HVAC engineer or SENIOR technican that can ANALYSIS the whole system and has the equipment to meausre air flow and pressure drops in the duct work.
