I'm removing carpet glue from my basement wooden stairs and I am using a heat gun. It still takes a long time, but I am finding that it works... especially for a small space. You have to be careful not to burn them, of course. I want to refinish them and put down a heavy duty paint. I think they'll look really good when I'm done.
