pop-up bathroom sink stopper

I have a piece of metal that looks like the letter 'U'. iT SEEMS TO BE SOME KIND OF SPRING METAL. i'm not sure how to attach it sothat the sink stopper stsys up or down. I put it on the rod attached to the stopper but it comes off after a while. This is an American Standard sink faucet unit.
