There are many fitration options available depending on what you want to spend. The answer to your question is yes get rid of the washable pad if you have a filter grille in the wall and if it was installed with a deep enough recess you can put in a four inch pleated filter that will last longer and is rated up to merv 11 or 12 (very fine filtration) you will probably have to go to a local supply house to get one
