removing staples and wood

Can anyone help me with this? I'm taking up the carpet in my middle room. How do I remove the wood that's nailed to the floor and the staples? is there a tool that I can buy to get this up or should I just use a knife and staple remover? I also heard that using cutting the carpet in 4 squares with a carpet knife makes it easier. Your answers and advice is appreciated. I'm a new homeowner.
