Not a good situation. Especially if you use motors,appliances,electronics with polarized plugs (one blade larger than the other). They should trip the breaker but to stay on the safe side, go out and get a receptacle tester at your local hardware store. Buy the one that has three lights and can tell you a variety of diagnoses such as no ground, Hot and neutral reversed, etc. Is this a new house? In my experience as an electrician, I only know of one guy who had a problem with polarity, and he didn't last.
