I should qualify my response to include the possibility that upon installation, the white was wired hot at the panel and the black as the neutral. Not standard protocol(not even legal by code), but in any case, a small, plug-in receptacle tester should tell you what you need to know. Don't try to open up the panel unless you really know what you're doing. Good luck.
