stair install Posted by funnyjuggler on May 11th, 2008 05:19 PM
I think I bit off more than I was expecting. I tried to pry off what I thought was a decorative riser, so I could install a nicer one for new hardwood flooring. Much to my surprise, removing this riser, unhooked the whole set of stairs. (only 2 treads/3 risers). As I pryed on the riser the stair set tilted back.
is it usual to have a set of stairs such as this attached with only 5 nails, only along the top riser? This top riser is made from 1/4 plywood. It doesn't seem very strong to me. There were no mechanical fasteners of any kind at the bottom, or anywhere else. the bottom could have just slid out, if it were not for the sheet of K3 underlayment resting against it. I will be removing the k3 for hte new hardwood.
Now that I've fixed the other stuff I needed to do, I want to be sure that I re-install the stairs correctly.
