it could be that your control button is defective.

trace the wiring from the control button to the opener. to rule out a broken wire or opener button, try shorting the two terminals that the control button conects to. if the opener responds to this, then you just need to replace the wire/opener button. otherwize, you may want to get a new opener, ,as I'm not sure if it's worth it to fix an older one.
