Out of level and square is the norm for old houses......

And a half inch is a SMALL amount....

The tub appears to be fiberglass.....provide level blocking per manufacturer around the tub's edge for support.....And bottom support ?

Backerboard laid with thinset and fasteners sounds good......How's the workmanship.....everything flat and flush

If you want it level......SelfLevelingCompound....SLC.....can be poured on top of the backer
