deck over patio

This is the first time I have used this forum and hope I am not putting this in the wrong place.

I have a deck around my house which is over the entrance to the walk-in basement. It creates a very nice patio cover for the basement entrance except that it is not waterproof. I believe it was Bob Vila that did a show putting something on the underside of a deck in a similar situation that would allow rain water to drain away and create a dry area under that portion of the deck. I have several ideas but my ideas would allow dirt to collect in the cracks on the upper side of the deck. If I drop a false "ceiling" under the deck, it will be too low. Any ideas?
