A year and a half ago, I had a trex deck installed in my new home. At the cost of $17,000 (not including railing) I was told that the deck would be maintenance free for the most part. The contractor told me that the only maintenance I would have to do is a periodic cleaning only if debris collected on it (such as fallen leaves). My deck receives Southern exposure and gets sun all day. There are no trees near it and we have barely stepped out on it, yet, we have major mildew spots that are evenly spaced all over the trex material. It took me 7 hours to clean it off a month ago, only to see that it's coming back now. This is not a low maintenance item. You're right, it doesn't split or crack, but it's high maintenance and not what trex claims. Although it may not splinter, I have to say it still looks like plastic and doesn't have the look of real wood. This was something I was willing to overlook to get the low maintenance benefit. I regret my decision to spend the extra money on it, and I truly wish I would have put in a beautiful wood deck.
