Stir, don't shake.

Always thin. Final coats are thinned about 10%

Apply as little as possible to get complete coverage. The average desk top will take me less than 1/8 cup.

A good brush, I like the "badger hair" brushes (no badgers are harmed in the production of these brushes.)

Don't drag the brush on the rim of the can. Put the varnish is a separate container, press the brush onto the sides. Throw away what's left over.

Don't over work the finish -- apply it slowly and deliberately. You are not painting a barn.

When you finish a section, "tip off." With a nearly dry brush, hold it almost straight up from the surface and with very little pressure make a long stroke from one end to the other. Wipe the brush and keep going.

I teach finishing classes to hobbyists and over working and putting it on too thick are the most common problems I see in the lab exercises.
