Extending 8 ft attic ladder to 10 ft..

We bought a house that had been built for a family who ended up divorcing and not moving into the home. When we finally got around to putting things into the attic, we realized that the attic stairs are 24 inches short. We bought the house as is so we could not go back to the previous owner or builder. Steps are new and to replace is expensive. I have looked for a way to extend the steps that 2 ft but having no luck. Any ideas? I would have to hire someone to replace once I bought which would cost me over $500 to do. Please help. We are using big cinder blocks and I am so afraid I will fall. Not as young as I used to be. Any and all suggestions appreciated. We live in East Tennessee.
