The exploded view was no help. I knew that those individual parts were what I needed to see, but couldn't figure out how to get the d*mn thing apart. Then I got the clue. E X P L O D E ! The three m-80's I used to try and disassemble the delta assemblage did manage to get it apart. See Bathroom remodel.

Now I will try and render some HELPFUL advise.

Most likely you are struggling with the same problem as I just did. You shut the house water off, took the fancy shower knob off, and found the assemby encased in a brass sleeve that for the world looks like it is one piece. If you have the same model as mine, look VERY closely at the front facing 1/2 inch of the brass sleeve. That is what is screwed onto the remaining sleeve. Mine was tightened in place by King kong, and then welded on by years of water seeping into the threads. A large monkey wrench may work, but be sure that you are not trying to loosing the back portion of the brass sleeve. Unless you want to replumb.... I actually used an oil filter/pvc wrench that I bought at home depot a while back. worked perfectly... much bettter than a monkey wrench. Once you are able to get that part of the brass sleeve off, the rest will be easy.
