Likely timer problem

Good. That is a Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washer design.

** I can't hear the motor running over the pump. **

The pump is mounted directly onto the motor. If the pump is running the motor has to be as well.

** it washes fine, switches to rinse and pumps out but with no spin unless I open the lid and then close it **

Does the motor pause briefly on its own after most of the water has been drained from the machine? It has to in order to set the transmission into spin mode as explained at the previously supplied link. If it is NOT pausing the motor, the timer is not functioning properly... or is the incorrect one for the washer.

** The timer I just installed was rebuilt. **

I usually only recommend using rebuilt components as a last resort like should a new replacement be no longer available. It can be frustrating enough trying to determine the original problem without having to second guess the 'new' part you're installing.
