The first thing I do is heat it with a hair dryer. This plasticizes the adhesive and eases the removal. If any residue remains, I like Goo-Gone. But sure to leave it on long enough to do its job, and be sure to test it in an obscure spot to make sure it's not going to damage or oil-stain your paint.
