If by that you mean lacquered wood veneer, it's no problem. If by that you mean melamine or rigid thermo foil, then you will probably have adhesion problems with most common paints.
And as a hint, do not use latex paint for bookcases or you will find all the books and objet d'art sticking to them in short order. Use a quality oil-based enamel.
