In case you haven't noticed, I don't think anyone here gets compensated for sharing their time and expertise. I'm sure if you wanted to hire a structural engineer, they will probably tell you:
a) 1/4" in 8 feet is plenty, it's a standard
or
b) you can go a little more if you want to.
