anything out there. I can see a problem in that the thermostat in a gas heater is normally part of the gas valve assembly making it nearly impossible to replace or modify. And probably illegal or at least ill advised.
Still, in a house with both parents working, a normal set up, the water heater is running 24/7 even if it's only needed early in the morning and then in the evening. I would think you could save a reasonable amount of gas with a well insulated tank and a programmable thermostat. Keep the tank at 80 degrees during the day, bump it up to 120-130 when needed. In this day and age any savings is a good thing. Maybe some manufacturer will offer one someday?
